Q&A: Don’t you hate judgemental dentists?

Question by tiosharaveen: Don’t you hate judgemental dentists?
I mean I take pretty good care of my teeth, but I do still have some trouble. I grew up in a small town with an old school dentist that did not believe in any kind of anesthesia. When we went to his office, we came out looking like we’d been butchered. Since then, I just HATE going to dentists. I finally muscled up enough strength to go and I regretted it more than anything. The dentist I went to wasn’t giving me “advice” or “tips”, he was flat out talking $ hit about me and my “lack of concern for my teeth”. He was saying things like “do you think you’re teeth take care of themselves” and “how about you wait another twenty years before you come back and let’s see what we have to work with then”. This a$ $ hole seems to have forgotton that I’m the one PAYING his a$ $ !

What pisses me off even more is that I didn’t even say anything because my nerves were shot from walking in the office in the first place. Now, I have to look for another dentist. Hell, maybe I should just get dentures…
Chopstick, that’s bullShit! I could understand if I wasn’t PAYING him! The guy I went to was an actual Dentist. Do you honestly think downing your patient is good dentistry? If you don’t like what you do, then get the heck out of the business. If ALL people took care of their teeth, they wouldn’t have a damned job!!

Find Your Smile Again, Before You Have to Replace it!

When your natural teeth begin to fall out, it is time to think about replacing them. This is usually done with dentures. Dentures are false teeth that are made to look like real teeth so that you have a natural and attractive smile. There is very little stigma attached to having dentures anymore, as many people have them now. There are two different types of dentures. One kind is called complete and the other kind is known as immediate. Each has its purpose, but when all of your teeth are gone, most people prefer the complete dentures. These are the “conventional” dentures that most people are familiar with; they are the dentures that look like a set of teeth.

Immediate dentures are more like individual teeth. When people start losing their teeth, one at time, immediate dentures can be put in place to fill in the spot. Sometimes these are used for people who have had their teeth knocked out in an accident while playing sports or in a car accident. These individual dentures may need adjusting, though, after a while. When a tooth falls out, the gums usually swell. It registers with the body as an injury, and so the body will work to heal the gums. This often causes the gums to shrink. When the gums shrink, it means that your immediate dentures no longer fit properly. You may need them realigned so that they look more natural and attractive.

After a few months, when the gums have all healed, many people choose to switch to the complete dentures. These dentures look like a full set of teeth. Even if all of the natural teeth are gone, some people prefer to use the immediate dentures for a few months before transitioning to the complete. This is because when the gums shrink, it can affect the fit of the complete dentures as well. By using immediate dentures initially, and then switching after the mouth is “reset,” the person ensures that his or her new teeth will fit properly, and that everything is in order.

Interestingly enough, for a while many people had their dentures stained slightly so that they were off white. This was because if they were too white, people would think it unnatural and know they were dentures. However, now, due to the growing popularity of bleaching the teeth, many people choose not to have their dentures stained to look “natural.” Because so many people now have bright white teeth, there is no reason to try to change the way dentures look in order to “fit in.”

Keeping your dentures clean is important, as dirty dentures can lead to bad breath and an unattractive-looking mouth. Proper care of your dentures will be explained to you when you get them, and you should follow all directions for care as closely and carefully as possible. When you do clean your dentures, make sure that you do so over a soft, thick towel. That way, if you drop them, they are less likely to break. You should carefully loosen the large pieces of food, and you should follow the remaining directions from your dentist for cleaning and storage.

There was a time when people who wanted the perfect smile had to rely on dentures to get them. Personal dental health practices have really improved immeasurably nowadays. Ask the older people about their dental health practice and the likely answer would be just brushing their teeth every day and using a mouthwash every now and then. And how has that habit served them? A full set of dentures by the time they’re in their fifties.

There are two main reasons why people before opted for dentures. First was mastication, having no teeth obviously presents problems when eating. And second was for aesthetics; it is difficult to smile without teeth after all. But dentures really aren’t that good for mastication.  Functionally, they only can approximate less than 10% the efficiency of real teeth in chewing food.  As for the aesthetics, sure dentures look good. Any good dental technician can make dentures look like the real thing. But dentures are rigid appliances and with the constant motion they make inside the mouth as the mouth moves, they have the tendency to slip which produces a lot of discomfort for users.

Take a great big city like Chicago and think if all those people would opt for dentures. Having a better alternative to dentures, they most probably would not. Science has perfected dental implants that are a whole lot better than dentures.

For dental implants, Chicago represents a big market. With such a large population and everyone earning good money, many would opt for implants than dentures if only for the functionality it restores in mastication and the removal of those embarrassing moments a denture brings.

As for the procedure for dental implants, Chicago residents can surely contend with the minor discomforts of having them. Advances in implant metallurgy makes sure that the recovery time for procedures are getting shorter and that most post-procedure complications are avoided.

And as to the advantages of having the procedure for dental implants, Chicago as a market would likely offer competitive pricing for the service. The demand for the procedure will only increase as it offers more advantages in terms of costs, functionality, aesthetics and durability.

Even worse than the dentist who says that is the dental hygienist who says things like that. Just because she took a brief course majoring in tooth scrubbing with a minor in flossing she feels she is qualified to say “Do you want to lose those teeth from lack of proper cleaning?” It makes you want to come back with a reply like “Yes – then I won’t have to put up with crap from people like you.”

  2. Chapstick says:

That’s crap that you would say that about Dental Hygienist! They did not just take a brief course. And somebody has to worry about your teeth if your not going to! Do you think it’s pleasant to have to scrape old food of off some one else’s teeth?? Well, it’s not. And when that’s what you do every day you try to say what you can to raise the patients concern for their own oral hygiene. They are trying to help. Sometimes you have to be blunt to get your point across.

I didn’t say that the way he went about it was appropriate and what I said was more towards the guy talking crap about Hygienist. It gets aggravating to see people not taking care of their teeth. And part of his job is to try and get patients to have better oral hygiene. Do you really think Dentists are sitting around hoping that more people will be nasty so they can get paid? Well, your wrong. Most people who work anywhere near teeth actually care about their patients and what kind of hygiene they have. They wouldn’t have gone to school for it if they didn’t have a ginuine interest in teeth! Part of my job is to instruct people on hygiene and it makes me so happy when a patient that I sat and went over brushing and flossing with has great oral hygiene! It really really matters to me! I want people to have healthy good looking teeth! I’m also careful about the way I correct people on their brushing because I don’t want to offend them or hurt their feelings. If you don’t like what he says, go somewhere else. I also think you seem rude.
And if your not paying someone and they feel the need to comment on your hygiene, that’s even worse sweet heart.
