How does the government impact dentistry, specifically dental hygienist?

Posted on 30 April 2012

Hi, I’m doing a paper on how I want to be a dental hygienist.
My teacher wants to know how a dental hygienist (or dentistry in general) is impacted by the government or other social forces in its ability to fulfill its mission/do their jobs.
I’m clueless on how the government plays a role in dentistry for fulfilling its mission/doing their jobs.

  1. An excellent advice giver says:

People on welfare insurance (poor people) can get dental cleanings at a dental office because of state governments. Look that up and put that in your paper.

Im not really that knowlodgable about the govmnt and dentistry lol, but I do know that on the NHS it impact root canal treatments (endodontics).

The easier, and most effective method of filling (obturating) a root canal is to use a technique called ‘thermafilling’.

The root canal filler (guttaperka) is provided in a range of sizes to snugly fit the root. The material is heated, and placed into the canal. This takes around 30seconds.

However the thermafil costs £6 per canal, so under the NHS it is not economical to use this method.

The method used is called cold lateral compaction which you can google.

Thats about all I know at the moment haha! hope it helps a bit.
